Hallux rigidus
December 31st, 2009 . by adminThere are many problems that can happen to the big toe joint of the foot. One of the most common is osteoarthritis. When this progresses, the big toe joint does not move resulting in a condition called hallux rigidus. Hallux is the technical name for the big toe and rigidus implies that it is rigid, in that it does not move. When this happens there is very little that can be done to get the joint moving again apart from surgery to put an artificial joint or spacer in. Sometime a rocker sole on the shoe can be helpful in allowing walking to be more efficient.
