Jobs Rochester has are few and far between. I know this because I am one of the many candidates that is looking for a job. I know just from reading up on the country’s economy that there are other areas that are far worse that Rochester. But certainly jobs Rochester has are not a dime in a dozen any more. I have talked with people about this, and we believe that the issue of jobs Rochester contains goes back in history hundreds of years. To understand jobs Rochester has you have to understand Rochester history. Rochester’s main economic support came from being a hub on the Erie Canal. Rochester is connected by the Genesee River to the Erie Canal, making it connected by water to New York City, Albany, and many other cities. Jobs Rochester has used to be plentiful back in the height of the Erie Canal. But soon after, the Industrial Revolution brought about trains and automobiles, making water travel less sought after. Even after the dwindling prospect of the Erie Canal, jobs Rochester contained hung in there for a little while. People seemed to stay around for a few decades, but eventually numbers in the area started declining. The number of jobs Rochester has also declined. Then, in the late 20th century, things got worse for jobs rochester has. Eastman Kodak, which was once the photography company, failed to keep up with the digital, Information Age. A host of companies took their business, and the company simply did not keep up. Another company with a lot of jobs Rochester had is Xerox, which also started dwindling and proceeded with lay-offs. It is too bad, because Rochester’s surrounding suburbs were gaining attention for their excellent schools, and for a time people were flocking in for jobs Rochester had and great schools.
