I don’t own a backpacking stove. I just don’t think that cooking and cleaning and fighting with butane technology is an important enough part of the backpacking experience. So the following two recipes are simple and require no cooking.

1. Basic trail mix. Make your own trail mix and you can save money as well as have a healthier food. Ingredients can vary, but a combination of dried fruits (raisins, dried cranberries) and nuts or seeds (peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds) and chocolate (dark chocolate chips are best) gives you the carbohydrates, fats and protein that you need.

2. Trail salad.  If you know which leafy greens out there can be eaten (dandelion leaves are great in early spring before they get too bitter), you can bring a couple radishes and a small bottle of olive oil – maybe with a little wine vinegar mixed in. A salad is a great addition to the typically fresh-food-deficient backpacking diet.
